Understanding your death benefits

Jan 18, 2023
Your pension comes with a range of benefits. Including some that could be paid out when you die.

The death benefits from your pension depend on:
  • whether you’re a DB or IWDC member
  • the rules of the Section you belong to
  • the retirement options you select, and
  • whether you’re retired or still working when you die

You’ll find a brief guide to what this means for you in the death and your pension blog.

For more detailed information, please check your Member Guide. This can be found under ‘My library’ when you log into your myRPS account.

What you can do for your family

There are 2 things you can do to help make sure your loved ones can benefit from your pension when you die.

1. Make your nominations

If you’re an active or preserved member, or if you took your pension benefits within the last five years, your death benefits may include a lump sum, which is paid out when you die.

You can let the Trustee know who you'd like the lump sum to be paid to by making a nomination.

Nominations make sure your wishes are known, and can help speed up the payment process in the event of your death.

You can make your nominations quickly and easily by logging into your myRPS account.

Please remember to check your nominations regularly and to update them if needed.

2. Make sure your family know who to contact about your pension when you die

When you die, it may be up to your family to report your death to the Scheme administrator, Railpen.

This needs to be done as soon as possible, particularly if you have already started taking your pension when you die. If you have, then we need to stop payments quickly, otherwise your beneficiaries may be asked to pay it back later.

You can tell Railpen about a death by:

  • Calling 0800 012 1117 and selecting Option 2: Bereavement. Or calling +44 1325 342 800 internationally
  • Emailing csu@railpen.com or
  • Writing to Railpen at PO Box 300, Darlington, DL3 6Y

Please make sure your friends/family have this information and know what they need to do when you die.

They can find more details about how to report a death, the details they’ll need to give us and how death benefits are paid on the  reporting a death page
